Ryan Giggs is said to ‘despair of’ winger Memphis Depay as his struggles at Manchester United continue.
The Sun reported exclusively on Monday that the United dressing room was ‘in meltdown’ after their latest defeat – a 3-0 reverse at Tottenham on Sunday.
Neil Ashton claimed that Louis van Gaal had criticised Marcus Rashford at half-time, as well as ‘pointing the finger’ at Marcos Rojo.
The duo were partly culpable in the defeat at White Hart Lane, one which leaves United four points off the pace in the race for Champions League qualification.
In another Sun ‘exclusive’, Ashton claims that assistant manager Giggs has been left exasperated by the struggles a different player has faced.
‘The commitment and attitude of Memphis Depay and Matteo Darmian was also questioned after their latest pitiful contribution,’ Ashton writes. Depay replaced Juan Mata after 76 minutes at White Hart Lane, by which time the score was already 3-0.
Darmian, on the other hand, was substituted on for the impressive Timothy Fosu-Mensah after 68 minutes, with United holding the title contenders to a 0-0 draw at this point. Eight minutes later, Spurs were winning 3-0, with each goal coming down Darmian’s right flank.
‘Memphis, sent on in the 76th minute with United 3-0 down, appeared completely uninterested,’ wrote Ashton. ‘He has ruffled the feathers of the first-team squad since his £25million arrival from PSV Eindhoven last summer.
‘Assistant boss Ryan Giggs, one of the greatest left wingers in the history of the sport, is said to despair of Memphis.’
On Italian right-back Darmian, Ashton added:
‘Darmian, who had come on at right-back eight minutes earlier for the injured Timothy Fosu-Mensah, was rinsed by Christian Eriksen out on the wing.’
