Ryan Giggs wants the permanent Manchester United manager gig, and does not want to fill in on a caretaker basis should Louis van Gaal be sacked, according to reports.
In the Daily Mirror, John Cross writes that United are increasingly concerned that Giggs could walk away in the summer if Jose Mourinho is appointed in his stead.
If that is the case, Giggs might as well start packing up his things now. As soon as Pep Guardiola got the Manchester City gig, Giggs became an unlikely next appointment.
‘Giggs believes it could be now or never for his own ambitions to be the club’s manager, but former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is in pole position to get the job,’ Cross says.
‘The 42-year-old does not want to be seen as just filling in again and while he is fiercely loyal to United and Van Gaal, the former Wales international would be left with a huge dilemma.’
The thing is Ryan, the best you’re gonna get is the caretaker gig. It’s kind of a given when you are an assistant manager that you might have to step up. Your biggest worry is that Mourinho won’t want you as his assistant.
Is this a face-saving move from Giggs? Leak the ‘I might leave’ line to the media, so that if you are squeezed out of the club it looks like it was your call?
