Olivier Giroud has admitted he was ‘annoyed’ by his treatment at the hands of some France fans at Euro 2016.
The Arsenal striker was used as a ‘scapegoat’ by those angry at the French federation for not picking Karim Benzema for his part in a sex scandal.
Giroud believes he deserved more respect after scoring 24 goals in all competitions for the Gunners last season.
“I immediately realised that the people who booed me were not anti-Giroud, but pro-Benzema,” Giroud told Le Parisien.
“It could not be otherwise. I came from a great season with Arsenal. It was just disappointing.
“Yes, it annoyed me. I was not even remotely responsible for this story and I did not understand the kind of hatred that developed against me. The Benzema fans wanted a scapegoat and it fell on me.”
