Olivier Giroud wants to stay at Arsenal this summer as he has “a secret hope” that he can become the club’s first-choice striker next season.
Giroud has been linked with both Lyon and West Ham after another campaign of intermittent chances at the Emirates Stadium.
The 30-year-old struggled with injuries at times last season, but still started just 17 games in all competitions.
He scored 16 goals and assisted seven however, and was a match-winning substitute in May’s FA Cup final against Chelsea.
Lyon chief-executive Jean-Michel Aulas says that club are interested in the Frenchman, but Giroud is eager to stay in north London and prove his worth.
“There has been an approach, at some point, for Giroud. He is a boy that we like, who scores lots of goals and who has a lot of ambition for Russia (World Cup),” Aulas told L’Equipe.
“He told me personally that he wanted to take his time, that things were not completely defined with Arsenal, that he had a secret hope that he would be the number one striker next season.
“The key is Arsène Wenger. We are watching.
“We will try to very quickly sign a top European attacker.”
