SCHMEICHEL TO UNITED LIKE IT’S 1991
The Schmeichels have no regard for the Manchester derby hate. Peter became one of the best goalkeepers in the world at United before playing for City. Now Kasper, who started at City, is being linked with a move to United. Someone get Terry Cooke on the phone for his thoughts.
The claim comes from Sky Sports, and a story strangely assigned to ‘SSN HQ’. Do they have a secret bunker where Jim White sits in a high-backed chair in his yellow tie and they all keep their ears to the ground for transfer stories? Probably not.
‘Manchester United have taken the lead over Manchester City in the chase for Kasper Schmeichel,’ their story reads, which is interesting not least because we didn’t know Manchester City even wanted Schmeichel.
‘United’s chances of landing the 30-year-old Denmark international have improved after Schmeichel left his long-term representatives, Triple S Management, to join Italian agent Luca Bascherini – an agent who enjoys excellent relations at Old Trafford.’
Sky have used that information, plus a report last month in A Bola, to back up the story. Hmmmm.
COULD PUEL BE SET FOR SOUTHAMPTON CHOP?
That’s certainly what the noises coming out of Southampton say. In the Daily Telegraph, Matt Law reports that Puel ‘faces an anxious wait’ with Southampton set to review his management this summer.
Puel was only appointed last summer, and given a three-year contract. This season has been difficult, but Southampton have reached the EFL Cup final and could still easily finish eighth in the Premier League. Given the players they lost last summer, and the lack of striker for the first half of this season, that’s a pretty decent effort.
The Daily Star go further on the claims, reporting that a number of Southampton’s players are disillusioned with life under Puel. That includes Ryan Bertrand, Nathan Redmond and Virgil van Dijk. THree of the best players, then.
“The board are aware there are a lot of unhappy players in the dressing-room and that is far from ideal going into the summer,” the Star quote a club source as saying. Interesting.
CHELSEA CONFIDENT OF LANDING VAN DIJK
We have previously been told that Manchester City and Liverpool are leading the race to sign Virgil van Dijk, but now it’s Chelsea who are reportedly confident of signing the Southampton central defender. One thing does look certain: The Dutchman will be moving somewhere in the Premier League this summer.
An exclusive from Neil Ashton claims that Chelsea have won the race for Van Dijk after they offered Andreas Christensen as part of the deal, and says that Arsenal have now lost out on a deal for Van Dijk. We didn’t even heard Arsenal’s name mentioned with his signing.
