PSG WANT STURRIDGE FOR £50M
Holy wow, well ain’t this a big story. The Sun’s chief football reporter Neil Ashton has himself an ‘exclusive’, and it’s pretty ballsy. Ashton claims that Paris Saint-Germain have targeted the £50m signing of Daniel Sturridge.
Now just listen here. Either nobody at PSG has watched anything other than a ‘Daniel Sturridge best goals, assists, skills 2010-2016’ video on Youtube and therefore knows nothing of his injury problems, or they’re prepared to take a whacking great risk.
Sturridge has managed 139 club starts in his ten-year professional career. Anyone who therefore thinks paying £50m is a good idea either needs their head checking, has far too much disposable income (…) or has taken out some excellent insurance.
In fairness, although Ashton’s story is an exclusive, the Daily Mail back page does run the same story but with a fee of £45m mentioned.
WENGER TARGETS A SQUAD OVERHAUL
It’s a story in the Daily Mirror, accompanied by the phenomenal headline: ‘Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger plans to buy and buy not say ‘Bye-bye!’ this summer’. We’re not sure if we mean ‘phenomenal’ as a compliment.
It’s a story from John Cross, who says that Wenger ‘wants to oversee a major rebuild of his squad this summer’. Hmmm, we’ve heard that before.
Anyway, the possible signings mentioned are as follows: Victor Wanyama, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Toni Kroos, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, John Stones. They even include a ‘dream XI’ in which all but Aubameyang are included.
What price one (Wanyama) out of the four actually arriving?
EVIDENCE VAN GAAL IS GOING
No, it isn’t that United are struggling to even make the top four, crashed out of Europe to Liverpool or have spent a sh*tting great whack of money with very little discernible improvement. It’s a new video. United have published a video to promote their summer tour of China without boss Louis van Gaal featuring.
The Manchester Evening News report that the 48-second clip features 14 first-team players including Wayne Rooney, David De Gea and Marcus Rashford, but there is no sign of the Dutchman – a fact which the local paper describes as “just plain odd”.
Van Gaal has a year to run on his United deal and he is still the face of the team despite increasing criticism of his and his style of play. The club have never commented on Van Gaal’s future or made reference to the other main contenders for his job – Jose Mourinho and Ryan Giggs – but this could well be a hint that Van Gaal’s time has run its course.
Of course, his omission in the footage could be an oversight, but it’s a pretty big one at that, especially when you consider last season’s video of the tour of the US featured the imposing Dutchman heavily.
That said, it isn’t that weird that they would leave him out, is it? There is every chance that he might go and the club are just hedging their bets. That seems fair enough.
