WHO DO UNITED WANT?
With the 2016 summer transfer window over, attention now turns to the business that really matters. The actual football? Erm, no. It’s the 2017 summer transfer window, actually.
And the world of football transfer rumours has already managed to whip itself up into a frenzy which promises to continue for 12 full bloody months. Many, many outlets are reporting the news that Manchester United want Antoine Griezmann next summer.
The appeal is obvious. The France international has been a revelation at Atletico Madrid, scoring 25 and 32 goals respectively in his last two seasons for the club. He followed that up with six strikes at Euro 2016. Along with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, he is the closest United will get to a potentially available proven goalscorer.
The key point is that Griezmann is not available now, of course. He is happy in Spain, and rejected chances to move this summer. Matters could change in a year, claim Bleacher Report, from whom the report emanates. Draw your own conclusions.
AND WHO DO LIVERPOOL WANT?
Enough about United; who are Liverpool looking to sign in the future?
The same players they missed out on signing this summer, apparently. The Liverpool Echo claim the Reds will revisit their interest in both Christian Pulisic of Borussia Dortmund and Mahmoud Dahoud of Borussia Monchengladbach when they get the chance.
With regards to Pulisic, Liverpool lodged an £11m bid for the winger, but Dortmund rejected the offer. As for Dahoud, Gladbach were unwilling to sell after having lost Granit Xhaka already. They could be more open to negotiations over the £25m-rated midfielder in 2017.
‘Liverpool’s hopes of securing his services next summer could hinge on whether they can offer Champions League football with a number of top European clubs having also registered their interest in him,’ James Pearce adds. So there.
How much do Arsenal want to keep Mesut Ozil? Enough to sign Shkodran Mustafi in an attempt to get him to stay, apparently.
‘Arsenal hope Shkodran Mustafi signing will persuade Mesut Ozil to commit future with Gunners,’ reports the Daily Mirror. Ozil has two years remaining on his current deal, but has been reluctant to commit himself further because he is ‘desperate to win major trophies’.
Which is where Mustafi comes in. Arsenal believe signing Ozil’s German international teammate, thereby bringing their summer outlay to £90million, will convince him they mean business. In fact, John Cross says almost precisely that:
‘It is understood Ozil and Mustafi are good pals and Arsenal believe that connection, as well as buying a proven top class international, shows they mean business.’
