Chelsea want Victor Wanyama as a budget version of Paul Pogba, Manchester United to approach Pep Guardiola (although the maths doesn’t fit), Arsenal in for Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi, PSG want Jose Mourinho next summer…
CHELSEA WANT WANYAMA
Our first nugget comes from the Star on Sunday, who claim an exclusive on the news that Chelsea want to hijack Tottenham’s move for Victor Wanyama.
They claim that Jose Mourinho sees Wanyama as the ideal man to provide some support to Nemanja Matic. The Serbian has struggled this season, outnumbered and overpowered when partnered with Cesc Fabregas.
The piece also reports that Mourinho has scouted Ruben Neves at Porto and Marko Grujic at Red Star Belgrade, while Paul Pogba remains the obvious ideal option. However, with Wanyama seemingly refusing to sign a new deal at Southampton, Chelsea could take the cheaper option and sign a player with Premier League and Champions League experience. Wanyama is still only 24.
UNITED TO APPROACH PEP
The Sunday Mirror make a song and dance of some very logical claims regarding the future of Louis van Gaal and Pep Guardiola.
They report that ‘Louis van Gaal has confirmed that he WILL walk away from Manchester United in 2017’, which is something that everyone already knew. They also say that, despite assumptions that Ryan Giggs was being lined up for the job, Pep Guardiola is ‘also on their radar’. Guardiola is one of the greatest coaches in world football, so of course they would consider him as an option.
There is the slight snag that Pep will leave Bayern next summer, when Van Gaal still has another year left to run on his contract. The paper don’t really answer that issue, instead saying ‘that would leave United’s hierarchy in a quandary as Van Gaal would still have a year left to run on his contract at that point’. Well yes, exactly.
ARSENAL IN FOR BATSHUAYI
Back to the Star on Sunday now, something that always feel like a walk of shame. They claim that Arsenal are preparing a January swoop (their words, not ours) for Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi.
This line did make us laugh: ‘Now he knows he has to act and the Belgium international Batshuayi, 21, has been added to a list of players he likes’. There isn’t an actual official list you know, pinned up in the boardroom at the Emirates.
The paper say that Marseille rate Batshuayi at £22m. Surely if Wenger rated him so highly he would have moved to sign him from Standard Liege in 2014?
AND THE REST
Paris St Germain will make an approach to tempt Jose Mourinho from Chelsea at the end of the season… Southampton want Rafael York, a 16-year-old Swedish wonderkid (won’t be as good as Stefan Selakovic)… Liverpool may loan out Divock Origi again when Daniel Sturridge recovers from injury… Sam Allardyce does not know whether he will manage again… Jose Mourinho has told John Terry that he remains his No. 1…Manchester United may sign Aaron Cresswell in January after Luke Shaw’s serious injury… Chelsea and Arsenal lead the chase for Sion’s Senegal striker Moussa Konate… Newcastle have been scouting Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette.
