Daniel Sturridge was ruled out of Liverpool’s pre-season friendly against Barcelona with a hip injury.
Sturridge was expected to start the game at Wembley, but pulled out after a training injury.
It is expected that the injury will be assessed, but that Sturridge is likely to miss the first league game of the season.
The injury is not thought to be serious, but Liverpool supporters are already wary of relying on the striker’s fitness given his troubles over the last two seasons.
Here is a list of Sturridge’s injuries since the beginning of 2013, working backwards: Hip, calf, hamstring, ankle, hip, thigh, thigh, calf, thigh, hamstring, thigh, hamstring, ankle, thigh, thigh, ankle, thigh, thigh, thigh. See what we mean?
Only last week, Sturridge spoke of his desire for this to be his big season in the Premier League:
“For me to play for Liverpool and show my abilities and show my qualities has always been the aim,” he said.
“I will continue to strive to be the best player—to be the best striker in the league and do the best for this club. I will strive to win silverware for this club.”
We really want to believe that Daniel. We really do.
