Pep Guardiola says that Alex Ferguson never sounded him out about managing Manchester United.
Guardiola joined City in 2016, was rumoured to have been on Ferguson’s list to take over from him in 2013, and he hinted as much in one of his books.
Yet Guardiola says that the pair met for dinner, but the subject of him being United manager never came up.
“If he suggested to me something like I go to Old Trafford, I don’t remember,” Guardiola said.
“I know he has said that but I don’t remember.
“We spoke about life, about football, the Premier League but he never sent me a message under the table to say, ‘You know maybe United…’ or something like that.
“It was just two friends, good friends, colleagues in football, talking about many things.
“I remember when he spoke a little bit fast it was difficult to understand him!
“But it was nice because he chose an amazing restaurant and, of course, he paid.”
But would he have done any better than David Moyes?
Remember when Guardiola sent Joe Hart out on loan after a poor season and Euros, and pundits acted like he had killed Diana.
Then David Moyes dropped Hart, and pundits were like “yes, that is fine. It is good that you did this”
