Guidolin admits Liverpool may be swansong

rancesco Guidolin accepts he could lose his job as Swansea manager if his side fail to beat Liverpool on Saturday.

Guidolin has come under increasing pressure with Swansea only one place above the relegation zone after failing to win a Premier League game since the opening day of the season.

Ryan Giggs – recently of Manchester United – and former United States boss Bob Bradley have been linked with the Liberty post, with the visit of Liverpool understood to be critical to the Italian’s future.

Asked if he could be out of a job if Swansea fail to beat high-flying Liverpool, Guidolin replied: “It could happen. Maybe.

“It’s not easy (to beat Liverpool). But if we win on Saturday for the period of the international break you don’t speak any more about my position.

“But my position is not important, Swansea’s (league) position is important, and we must get a result.”

Guidolin says he has not sought assurances from chairman Huw Jenkins, who appointed him in January on a temporary basis with Swansea in the bottom three.

The former Parma and Udinese boss steered Swansea to safety with seven wins from 16 games and he was handed a two-year contract in May.

“I spoke to the chairman last week, but I don’t need this,” said Guidolin.

“The most important thing is to work with my players and team on the training ground, to be focused on the next game.

“One of the best things of my experience in the Premier League was to know my players, last season and this season.

“I like it very much and, sometimes when I am worried for my job and our results and our position in the league, meeting them at the training ground is the best moment of the day.

“We can work together. I see them them work with passion and I heard they are behind me. This is important.

“I know this is not a good moment for the team, but we just need to work and get a result.

“This is football and without a result these words are not important.

“We need to win – it’s clear for me, clear for the chairman, clear for everyone.”

After a timid surrender at Southampton the previous week, Swansea produced an improved showing in losing 3-1 at home to league leaders Manchester City last Saturday.

And Guidolin feels Swansea will test fourth-placed Liverpool – who have scored 16 goals in six games – if they repeat that Liberty performance.

“They have to play free on Saturday, a good game without pressure,” said Guidolin.

“This is my job and I have to speak to my players about this.

“They have to show their qualities because they are good players and a good team.

“If we play on Saturday against Liverpool the same way as we did against Man City, then we can get a good result.”
