Ander Herrera admits “it’s a shame” that Manchester United could not sign Alvaro Morata this summer.

United pursued a deal for Real Madrid striker Morata for weeks, before eventually settling on signing Romelu Lukaku from Everton.

Manager Jose Mourinho also described it as “a shame” that the Spaniard would not be linking up with the squad.

Morata has since been linked with moves to Chelsea, AC Milan and the Chinese Super League, but Herrera regrets that he will not play with his compatriot next season.

“I even started to think I’d be playing with Morata. He was really close to signing,” he said.

“It’s a shame he’s not with us but he’s a top striker and will do well wherever he plays.”

The midfielder also discussed the future of keeper David de Gea, with Real renewing their interest in him.

“He’s happy and I know this is going to sound repetitive because I always say the same but David is one of the few keepers who wins you points,” he said.

“I’m going to do everything I can to make sure he stays.”
