Former Bayern Munich boss Ottmar Hitzfeld has hinted that the Bundesliga champions could look to replace Xabi Alonso with Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka.
Xhaka is yet to pull up any trees in his first season with the Gunners, having moved to the Premier League from Borussia Moenchengladbach for £30million in the summer.
The Switzerland international has just one goal and one assist from 20 appearances in the league this campaign, while he has been sent off twice.
And Hitzfeld believes that Bayern are monitoring the midfielder despite his poor start at the Emirates Stadium.
“Bayern certainly has Xhaka on the radar,” Hitzfeld said in an interview with SportBild.
“Xhaka is always a topic for current top clubs and his development is not yet complete.”
Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso announced he would be retiring at the end of the season with a message on Twitter reading: “Lived it. Loved it. Farewell beautiful game.”
