Sergio Ramos thinks it “would be historical” if he was rewarded for another successful season with Real Madrid with the Ballon d’Or title.
Former Juventus centre-back Fabio Cannavaro was the last defender to win the Ballon d’Or back in 2006 after he captained Italy to World Cup glory in Germany.
Ramos won the La Liga and Champions League trophies this season with Real Madrid and he is hoping that his performances could be enough for him to scoop the prize.
The title usually goes to a goalscorer or an attacking player and is rarely received by defenders but Ramos doesn’t think it is “crazy” to suggest that he could win the award.
“These last years have been all about both Leo and Cristiano, but, for example, [Fabio] Cannavaro, who was my partner, also won.
“You never see it as crazy. I have achieved lots of things throughout my career that are very, very good but if they rewarded me with a Ballon d’Or, that would be historical.”
