Adnan Januzaj can follow a similar path to Manchester City record signing Kevin de Bruyne, says Belgium boss Marc Wilmots.
Januzaj was thought to be part of Louis van Gaal’s first team plans at Old Trafford this season, but the winger was instead shipped out to Borussia Dortmund on loan for the campaign.
After exciting in his breakthrough season, Januzaj has struggled to live up to expectations in Manchester, and there is hope that his spell abroad could reignite his career.
Belgium boss Wilmots has likened Januzaj’s move to De Bruyne’s own spell in Germany with Wolfsburg, who he joined after struggling at Chelsea and prospered in the Bundesliga.
“The step back from Chelsea to Wolfsburg worked wonders for Kevin De Bruyne,” Wilmots told Bild.
“I am convinced that Adnan’s decision to join Dortmund on loan for one season is the right one. It will help him make the next step.
“Januzaj can enjoy a similar development to De Bruyne.
“Adnan can play as a number nine and on both wings. He has an amazing shot. I had never seen someone with such a shooting technique before. He can really hit a ball incredibly powerful from out of nowhere. I have already asked him once whether he has manipulated his shoes or the ball.”
