Jurgen Klopp should be worried about his squad…

Injuries have left Liverpool’s squad ravaged ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s first game, and it has highlighted just how weak a squad the German currently has at his disposal.

Less than 24 hours after it was revealed Joe Gomez was likely to miss the season after suffering an anterior cruciate knee ligament injury, the same fate has befallen Danny Ings after his first training session under new manager Klopp.

Only Newcastle (13 players) have a more injury-ravaged Premier League squad than the Reds (eight), and with right-back/left-back/centre-back Gomez and striker Ings now sidelined, it really does highlight the slender nature of Klopp’s squad ahead of his bow against Tottenham on Saturday.

Including goalkeepers, Liverpool now barely have 20 players in their first-team squad – a total which includes the likes of Cameron Brannagan, Pedro Chirivella and Joao Carlos Teixeira. Said trio have one Premier League appearance between them.

List of Liverpool injuries
Danny Ings (knee) – out for the season
Joe Gomez (knee) – out for the season
Philippe Coutinho (groin/pelvis) – potential return on October 17
Dejan Lovren (ankle/foot) – October 17
Roberto Firmino (back) – October 25
Christian Benteke (hamstring) – October 25
Jordan Henderson (foot) – November 21
Jon Flanagan (knee) – December 15

Such a list of crippling injuries leaves Liverpool considerably light on numbers. In terms of a potential starting line-up against Spurs, Klopp’s best bet could be:

Clyne    Skrtel  Sakho  Moreno

……….  Can      Lucas

………….     Milner

(half-fit) Coutinho     Lallana

What makes for even more difficult reading is Liverpool’s potential back-up side. Keep in mind that this is a side looking for Champions League qualification…

Cleary     (half-fit) Lovren    Toure       Enrique

………..Allen        Rossiter

…..Chrivella     Teixeira      Ibe

……………..     Origi

That’s Daniel Cleary, untried 19-year-old centre-half, by the way.

Liverpool’s squad, minus injured players and those out on loan, reads as follows:

GK: Mignolet, Bogdan, Fulton

RB: Clyne, Randall

CB: Sakho, Skrtel, Toure, Cleary

LB: Moreno, Enrique

CM: Milner, Lucas, Can, Allen, Brannagan, Rossiter, Chirivella

RM: Dunn

LM: Ibe

CAM: Coutinho, Lallana, Teixeira

ST: Sturridge, Origi, Sinclair

Good luck, Jurgen…
