Keown has the answer to Liverpool’s problems: Joe Gomez
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown says that Jurgen Klopp has to play Joe Gomez as a central defender if he wants to solve Liverpool’s defensive issues.
Liverpool conceded three times against Sevilla to throw away a three-goal lead and harm their chances of topping their Champions League group.
Gomez played in that game, but was picked as a right-back to cover for the injured Nathaniel Clyne. The defender impressed for England during the recent international break, but played as a centre-back for Gareth Southgate.
‘To go 3-0 up at Sevilla and then be taken apart is not good news,’ Keown wrote in the Daily Mail.
‘It allowed their critics to have a field day because everyone says their front line is among the best in Europe, but their defence certainly isn’t.
‘When it comes to building a defence, it is important you get the partnership right with your central defenders. That is the real foundation of the team.
‘Joe Gomez is in the team, but Klopp has to allow him to play in the middle. He played well for England in their three-man central defence, but then is being asked to play full back for his club.
‘I know Klopp believes in him, but the earlier you are allowed to play in your preferred position the better.
‘If Klopp can sew up the middle of his defence then a lot of Liverpool’s problems will disappear.’
