Klopp confirms Karius is Liverpool’s first choice

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Loris Karius is Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Karius joined the Reds for little over £4million from Mainz in the summer, but did not initially break into the first team after suffering a hand injury.

Simon Mignolet started the season as the club’s starting goalkeeper, with the Belgian playing the full 90 minutes of each of Liverpool’s first five games.

Karius has been a fixture in the first team since however, and Klopp has now confirmed that the German is his No 1.

“After the last international break I spoke to both of them and we made this decision,” he said. “That’s the ranking: Loris No 1, Simon No 2.

“He (Mignolet) is a very serious player, a good professional. He’s still not happy but you cannot see it in training. He is working hard and improving.

“It’s what I call a luxury problem. In this moment we have a No 1 and that’s Loris. That’s the situation. I cannot leave them in doubt.”
