Jurgen Klopp has fond memories of his relationship with Rafael Benitez – including beating him 5-0.
Benitez enjoyed a successful six years at Liverpool before leaving the club in 2010, with the Reds struggling to replace him in the intervening years.
Roy Hodgson, Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers all experienced varying degrees of success in the hot seat, which is now taken up by Klopp.
The German says he has a positive relationship with one of his main predecessors at Anfield, and is looking forward to seeing him again ahead of Liverpool’s meeting with Newcastle on Sunday. Klopp v Benitez is our one-on-one to watch this weekend.
“I met him once when he was manager of Liverpool, we beat him 5-0 with Mainz,” Klopp said. “Hopefully he remembers that!
“The rest is history, the big success. We met for sure 10-15 times and it was always very nice. He is a very interesting person.
“I know he’s still really connected to the club. He wishes it all the best and that’s how it should be.
“Even in pre-season we had talks. I know him better than most of the other colleagues in the Premier League.”
