Jurgen Klopp is building a Liverpool side capable of challenging “the biggest teams in world football”.
The Reds will complete the signing of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk for £75million on January 1.
Van Dijk will become the most expensive defender in history, and is the latest big-money purchase made by Klopp at Anfield.
Naby Keita also arrives on Merseyside for around £50million in the summer, and Klopp says these are the steps the club is taking to challenge the world’s best.
“We have to fight with the biggest teams in world football,” he said. “We cannot go there with a group of 11 and be best friends every day.
“We need to have a squad that is ready for that and we are building that step by step.
“That’s part of professional football, the really good players will always say the challenge from other players will always help you.
“No player should and can play a whole season.”
