Ronald Koeman believes Southampton “controlled the game” against Manchester United.
Saints sealed a 1-0 victory over United at Old Trafford thanks to an 87th-minute header from debutant and substitute Charlie Austin, with United registering just one shot on target.
Southampton rise to eighth as a result, just four points behind United, and while managerial rival Van Gaal felt Saints posed little threat, Koeman was happy with his side.
“We played very good,” Koeman told BBC Sport. “Our organisation was good, we were very compact, we had good pressing.
“We stayed in the game, controlled the game and you saw more nerves in the Man Utd team and finally we score from a corner kick.
“We showed spirit today, it was an amazing result for the second time here.”
