Kompany recalls how Man City got ‘spanked’ by Liverpool

Vincent Kompany admits Manchester City “got spanked” immediately after their last League Cup victory.

City beat Arsenal comfortably in the League Cup final on Sunday, and face the Gunners again on Thursday in their next Premier League fixture.

In a quirk of fate, the same thing happened to City the last time they won the trophy in 2016.

After beating Liverpool on penalties in the final on February 28 two years ago, they travelled to Anfield three days later and were soundly beaten 3-0.

Kompany is wary of preventing history from repeating itself.

“We got spanked,” he said, referring to their 3-0 defeat to the Reds. “Experience is a great thing so [we try to avoid a repeat] by mentioning that this is what happened and then by not forgetting how we got there.

Comparing Pep Guardiola’s side to past City ones, Kompany added: “We’ll have to see when the trophies are coming. If we win more and consistently, if we can win the Premier League then go again and again, then this team will be better than the previous one.

“We have scored hundreds of goals as well with [Manuel] Pellegrini. It’s been a feature of this club for many years now. I want to keep that hunger in the team, so I don’t want to put people on a pedestal when we haven’t achieved all of our targets yet. So, for now, it’s, ‘Well done, keep going’.”
