Jurgen Klopp has moved to ease injury fears over Joel Matip after the defender hobbled off during a pre-season friendly.
Matip, who joined the Reds in the summer on a free transfer from Schalke, started Sunday’s fixture against Wigan, but limped off towards the end of a 2-0 victory.
The club have already suffered injury blows to both Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez, leaving only Dejan Lovren as their sole recognised senior centre-half.
Augsburg defender Ragnar Klavan will join the club soon for £4.2m to provide cover, but Klopp has played down fears over Matip.
“I hope it’s only a minor problem,” Klopp said after the win, in which Danny Ings and Ben Woodburn scored. “He said he’s had it one or two times already.
“Joel gets better and better and better, you can see it. It’s not too seriously, hopefully.
“It’s the foot he had problems with in the past and then he had a little bit of pain when pre-season started because of the intensity. He’s used to it.
“Hopefully it is like this because everyone can see he’s in a real good way. I think tomorrow he’ll rest then he can go again.
“We had to make the decision of Joel or Dejan, who has to play the whole 90 minutes? We decided Joel but for him it was a little bit too much today.”
