Liverpool have ended their pursuit of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, according to reports.
Sky Sports News claim that the Dutchman will stay at St Mary’s despite handing in a transfer request earlier in the window.
An update on their Transfer Deadline Day live blog read: “Sources at Southampton are telling us defender Virgil van Dijk is definitely staying at the club.”
Van Dijk preferred a move to Liverpool all summer but Saints appear to have kept their man in what has been a long drawn-out transfer saga.
The Anfield club were accused of tapping up the 26-year-old earlier in the summer, forcing Liverpool to hold back their pursuit of the centre-back.
Metro reported on Thursday evening that it was likely Van Dijk would stay on the South coast, as neither of Liverpool or Chelsea had made an official bid.
