Jurgen Klopp has been dealt the first blow of his Liverpool tenure with the news that Joe Gomez is expected to miss the rest of the season with a suspected cruciate injury.
Gomez suffered the suspected ruptured anterior cruciate ligament injury while playing for England’s Under-21 team against Kazakhstan on Tuesday.
After the match, head coach Gareth Southgate played down the seriousness of the injury. “It seems to be OK,” he said. “We were a bit concerned at first but we are hopeful it’s nothing too serious.”
Gomez then had a scan on Wednesday, the results of which will be published on Thursday. Yet there is an expectation that it will return bad news.
Klopp was surely likely to prefer Alberto Moreno in his first game in charge at Tottenham on Saturday, but the news will come as a huge blow to Gomez, who had settled in excellently since arriving from Charlton.
Everyone at Charlton would like to wish @J_Gomez97 all the best in his recovery. #ComeBackStronger #cafc
