Former Chelsea defender David Luiz is “confused” over John Terry’s contract situation and thinks the club needs to show him “more respect”.

Chelsea captain Terry is out of contract at Stamford Bridge in the summer and has yet to be offered a new deal, despite his unprecedented success at the club.

And PSG centre-back Luiz believes his former club will be making a huge mistake if they allow the 35-year-old to leave at the end of the season.

“John is probably Chelsea’s greatest ever player, the club need to show him some more respect. He has been clear that he wants to stay at the club, and they are making him wait for an answer,” he said.

“That is not how you treat a player who has given you so much and been a big part of so much success. The fans love John – if this is not handled well, they are not going to be happy.

“I am confused why John hasn’t been offered a new contract. He is still the best central defender at the club and one of the best in England, there should be no question about him being offered another a year.

“I really don’t know what to say, the whole situation has confused me. I think it’s obvious to everybody he deserves an extension.”

Luiz joined Chelsea in January 2011, winning the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup, before being sold to PSG by Jose Mourinho.

The Brazilian missed out on Chelsea’s title win under the Portuguese, as well as the manager’s unceremonious departure earlier this season.

Mourinho is now strongly expected to replace Louis van Gaal at Manchester United, and Luiz says ‘the Special One’ would be a perfect fit at Old Trafford.

“Coaches come, coaches go, it’s part of football. Jose won’t be out of work for long, he never is,” he said.

“You can’t dispute the success he has had – that is why I am sure Manchester United are looking at him.

“I don’t think Jose would have any problem taking the Manchester United job. Yes, he will always care for Chelsea, but Jose does what is best for Jose.”

Luiz is preparing to face Chelsea in the Champions League on Tuesday night – a tie which John Terry will miss after picking up a hamstring injury.

But the 28-year-old insists his former club pose a dangerous threat to the Parisian’s European hopes, despite their poor domestic form this term.

“We have always said Chelsea’s form in the league means nothing in these two games. They are very capable in Europe, and they will be motivated for these two games,” he added.

“It is important to get a good first result in Paris. I know how Chelsea play, they won’t come and just attack at us.

“They will be patient, let us attack, and then try and hurt us on the break. They have the players capable of doing this, so we must be careful.”
