Louis van Gaal has labelled Memphis Depay “the greatest talent of his age” and has backed him to return to form after coming in for criticism once again.
The player has endured a frustrating time since moving to Manchester United from PSV Eindhoven earlier this summer and has not featured for the club in the Premier League since their 3-0 defeat at Arsenal on October 4.
The forward has been left out of Holland’s latest international squad with coach Danny Blind calling the player’s workrate and style into question to add to the player’s frustrating time of late.
But United manager Van Gaal insists that while Memphis is going through a lean spell, he’s confident he will soon return to form.
Addressing the media ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash against CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford, Van Gaal said: “He is only 21 and in a phase of his career where he has to adapt to many things. I’m confident he’ll come back strong.”
He added: “I have said he is the greatest talent of his age but he is only 21 and you cannot expect consistency.
“We have to give him time, like we will with Anthony Martial when he is a little bit lower in his shape.”
