Michael Owen says that Manchester United only signed him after missing out on Karim Benzema.
Owen joined United in summer 2009, and won one Premier League title among his three trophies in as many years.
The 37-year-old was never a regular first-team fixture at Old Trafford, making 52 appearances and scoring 17 goals.
But he says that his time at the club almost never came to pass, as United had targeted Benzema over him.
Benzema was in the process of leaving Lyon that same summer, and eventually joined Real Madrid, forcing United in the direction of Owen. What a consolation prize that is.
“I thank Benzema because without him I would never have gone to Manchester United,” he admitted to Canal+.
“Ferguson told me that I will only sign if he couldn’t get Benzema. And that’s what happened.”
