Manchester United will refrain from offering Wayne Rooney a new contract for at least another 18 months, according to reports.
Rooney’s form for both club and country has been the subject of huge scrutiny over the last couple of seasons, with his position in either side now being questioned.
The England captain’s current deal expires in 2019, but he has been told he must prove he is worth a rise on his £300,000-a-week wages.
“Rooney is ready to end his playing days at United. He is presently contracted until the summer of 2019, but nothing is in the pipeline,” The Sun quote ‘an Old Trafford insider’.
“It will be at least another 16 to 18 months or so before they even make a further look on an extension on that.”
The 30-year-old, who was recently labelled “overweight and slow” by Paul Parker, signed a five-and-a-half-year contract in February 2014.
