Roberto Martinez continued his transformation into Brendan Rodgers by saying that he had seen “outstanding” signs in his Everton squad this season.
Everton sit 12th in the Premier League, as close in points to 16th as they are the top eight.
Martinez’s Everton side have regularly thrown away leads this season, something which Martinez admitted was highly frustrating.
Martinez was speaking ahead of Everton’s FA Cup tie against Chelsea.
“I think we were all in the same boat,” he said. “We’ve seen outstanding signs this season of the squad we’re putting together.
“That’s why it’s so frustrating in games to win the game and then throw it away and lose it.
“They are the current league champions, so this is the type of game we want to be involved in.
“I think you need to look at the overall season, you’ve got a long period in this campaign, we’ve been very consistent in our away form, the home form – I think the consistency in our performances has been there.
“We need to take the pain and experiences we’ve had and get a good result.”
Martinez’s claims of consistency are interesting given that Everton have not won more than two consecutive league games all season.
Asked whether he thought Everton’s season had been one of underachievement, Martinez would not be drawn into a response.
“I think we have to wait until the end of the season.”
