Martinez: Many draws are close to victories

Roberto Martinez is convinced that Everton are ‘close’ to something truly amazing despite being 12th in the Premier League.

The Toffees have won only one of their last ten Premier League games but have been unbeaten away from home in that spell.

They suffered only their second away defeat of the season in midweek to exit the Capital One Cup to Manchester City.

“We have shown fantastic signs and great performances but it is something we need to improve as we are not winning every weekend and that is what we want,” said Martinez.

“Our young players are developing in a fast rate, they are taking responsibility and developing into top players and in the team in general we have good options and we need to become better.

“What is important in the stats is how close we have been to those results being very different.

“Looking into the stats there have been only two defeats away from home all season and we are getting close to being very consistent.

“Many of the draws have been close to victories. We need to make sure we use all the pain we had on Wednesday to become as good as we can be for the rest of the season.

“I am convinced we will get the rewards if we apply ourselves in those small margins.”

Everton face Carlisle in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday.
