Merson: Why didn’t Arsenal sign Gareth Barry?
Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has questioned why the Gunners didn’t sign veteran midfielder Gareth Barry from West Brom.
Barry, 36, left Everton this week to link up with Tony Pulis at West Brom on a one-year contract.
Merson believes the former Aston Villa and Manchester City star is an “unbelievable” signing for the Baggies and one that would have been an astute piece of business for his old club too.
“A great signing,” Merson told Sky Sports. “Why didn’t Arsenal take him for a year?
“He gets the ball, he moves it forward quickly, he doesn’t mess about. He gets the ball, he gives it the Ozil, he gives it to Sanchez.
“He’s never going to go anywhere, he’ll stay where he is. He keeps his shape. I think it’s an unbelievable signing for West Brom.”
