Monk: Newcastle move will motivate Shelvey

Former Swansea City manager Garry Monk believes Jonjo Shelvey’s recent move to Newcastle can offer the midfielder the motivation he needs to perform on a consistent basis.

Shelvey joined the Magpies from Swansea for £12million in January after falling out of favour in south Wales, where Monk managed the England midfielder during his reign at the Liberty Satdium between February 2014 and December last year.

Monk has previously questioned Shelvey’s attitude but the former boss says a club the size of Newcastle can keep the 23-year-old on his toes.

“I’m sure going to a club like Newcastle in front of that many fans and that type of club will suit him,” Monk told Sky Sports.

“A lot to do with Jonjo is motivation. He needs to be performing every single week and feel importance as a player. Newcastle will probably give him that.

“It will be interesting to see. I’m sure he will go there and do well.”
