Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has spent £300m in two summers on new signings but still claims he needs another transfer window to perfect his squad.
United have spent £150m this summer on Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof, but has said that the club were “clever” not to spend £150m on Lukaku alone.
The club pursued a winger but failed in a protracted move for Ivan Perisic, while there were persistent rumours about Gareth Bale.
United are top of the Premier League with three victories from their first three games but Mourinho does not believe he has completed his squad.
“I have said three transfer windows is what I need to have the team I want to have – the team I think can bring Manchester United to the top of English football and to close the gap to the top of European football again.
“I still think we need that third transfer window, but I’m not going to wait for the third transfer window to try to reach it,” he told The Times.
