Mourinho aims dig at rivals after Europa victory
Jose Mourinho says Manchester United have qualified for the Champions League by winning a trophy, “not by finishing second or third or fourth”.
United finished sixth in the Premier League this season, but brushed aside a poor Ajax team in the Europa League final on Wednesday.
They will be the fifth English side to compete in next season’s Champions League as a result, but Mourinho is happier to reach the competition through this route, as opposed to finishing in the Premier League’s top four.
“In a bad season, in a season where sometimes I felt that my team was the worst team in the world, where I felt that sometimes I was the worst manager in the world we managed to win three trophies and we go to the Champions League by winning a trophy, not by finishing second or third or fourth,” he said.
“We have the honour to go to the European Super Cup and play against the new Champions League winner, so I think the season was really good.
“Three trophies in one season and the Champions League.
“I am very happy in my most difficult season as a manager. It is the end of a very difficult season. But a very, very good season.”
