Mourinho: Arsenal’s top-four hopes hanging by a thread

Jose Mourinho says that Arsenal are almost out of the race to finish in the Premier League top four.

Manchester United beat Chelsea 2-1 on Sunday to strengthen their grip on a Champions League qualification place.

They rose back into second place ahead of Liverpool with the win, and opened up a six-point gap on the fifth-placed Blues.

Tottenham’s late win over Crystal Palace put them in fourth over the weekend, meaning Arsenal are now ten points behind their north London rivals with a game in hand.

They face City in a repeat of their Carabao Cup final defeat on Thursday, and Mourinho says they must win to remain in the top four race.

“The top one is there and will be there,” Mourinho said about City.

“Arsenal really needs to win against City in the next Premier League match or then the distance will be too big for them, like it happened to us last season.

“After that, Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and us, we are four very good teams, all fighting to be in the quarter-final of the Champions League.

“That shows the dimension of the league, but from the four of us somebody has to be out.”
