Mourinho explains when he will retire as a manager
Jose Mourinho says that he will retire from management “the day I don’t get emotional when I win”.
Mourinho secured the 24th trophy of his 17-year career as a manager on Sunday, his Manchester United side beating Southampton 3-2 in the final of the EFL Cup. It’s time to read 16 Conclusions.
With victory at Wembley, the Portuguese became the first United manager to win major silverware in his debut season, and it could be followed with triumphs in the Europa League and FA Cup.
Speaking after the win over Southampton, Mourinho explained that he is far from retirement just yet.
“I had my last one [trophy] here for Chelsea and it was as emotional,” he said.
“Winning is always special. The day I don’t get emotional when I win, that’s the time to go home.”
The Portuguese added: “I’m very happy as I was saying before it’s important for the fans, the club, the players.
“I try to put myself in secondary situation but the reality is that it’s hard for me, I put a lot of pressure on myself.
“I wanted very much to win a major trophy with every club and then by doing that with United it’s quite a sense of relief because it was a big target for me to win a trophy.
“But the reality is that we want more. My contract is long, I have two more years so hopefully I can win something more and this season I know it’s difficult but the reality is that we have to fight for more.”
