Mourinho, Man United reach ‘breakthrough’ over contract

Jose Mourinho and Manchester United have reached a breakthrough with regards to extending his contract at the club.

Mourinho was appointed United manager in summer 2016 on a three-year contract, and marked his first season with two major trophies.

The Portuguese’s long-term future has been the subject of much debate however, with Paris Saint-Germain a likely destination were he to leave.

But a number of outlets reported on Tuesday evening that Mourinho and United are ‘confident’ an agreement ‘can be reached’ soon. Let’s take a look at what has been reported.

* Jamie Jackson of The Guardian claims that there has been a ‘breakthrough’ in negotiations, and Mourinho will stay ‘if United offer him terms that he believes reflect the progress of the side under him’. The Portuguese ‘is demanding a marked increase in his package’. Aren’t we all?

Jackson adds that Mourinho ‘believes United will be much better equipped to challenge seriously again next season’. That’s the Alexis Sanchez effect.

* Neil Custis of The Sun reports that Mourinho will sign a five-year deal at Old Trafford. He refers to the club being second in the Premier League and in the knockout stages of the Champions League. But ‘most importantly, he has got a spirit back at the club’. Which is definitely why they’re offering him a new deal.

* Andy Mitten broke the story for The National, and says talks have ‘successfully concluded’ between all parties. The deal will be announced soon. So there.
