Mourinho: Pogba was cheap at world record £89m
Jose Mourinho says that Paul Pogba will be considered a bargain in a few years. Because you’re going to spend even more on Antoine Griezmann, you mean?
Pogba initially struggled following his move from Juventus back to Manchester United, after the player had a shortened pre-season and a busy summer at the European Championship.
However, the Frenchman has improved markedly over recent months, and has played in almost every minute for which he has been available.
Mourinho predicts that Pogba’s fee of £89m will soon be eclipsed, and believes that hindsight will render Pogba cheap.
“I think in a couple of years you will realise he was cheap. A few years ago £25m was a phenomenal player, now £25m is not even a player, it is a prospect of a player,” Mourinho said.
“I think next summer can bring a few surprises at this level and probably Paul will lose this status as the world’s most expensive player which will probably be a good thing.
“I am pretty sure that next summer some players with only half his quality will probably cost the same money or more so I am waiting for that moment to release him from the scrutiny.
“The most important thing for him is not to lose that happiness. I am really happy with what he did for example at Leicester and against Watford where people didn’t see him so much in dangerous areas but he gave us an incredible balance; recovering the ball and starting the build up from the back.
“It was really impressive and at the top of the pitch he is a guy that can score goals. He is still very young, he can be fantastic.”
JM: "I think the scrutiny on Pogba is very difficult. When he plays very, very well, which he does many, many times, many think it's normal"
