Mourinho ‘too wary to have Giggs as assistant’

Jose Mourinho does not want Ryan Giggs as an assistant at Manchester United because he doesn’t feel he can trust the club legend, according to reports.

Giggs is supposedly considering an offer to stay at the club, but it won’t be as one of Mourinho’s assistant managers – a role he performed under Louis van Gaal.

The Times carries a story on Friday saying Mourinho is wary of Giggs’ ambition to be United manager, which is a role he was being groomed for under Van Gaal. He also took caretaker charge when David Moyes was sacked in 2014.

Mourinho is also said to believe that Giggs failed to adequately support Van Gaal or Moyes when both managers began to struggle.

Matt Hughes’ story says:

‘It is understood that Mourinho believes that Giggs distanced himself from Louis van Gaal and David Moyes at crucial times during their ill-fated spells in charge at Old Trafford, while the Portuguese is also wary of his close relationship with Paul Scholes, who was highly critical of United’s past two managers.’

Giggs’ former team-mate Scholes regularly used his role as BT Sport pundit to criticise Van Gaal and United’s style of play under the Dutchman.
