Moyes: Wenger comments are ‘an insult to football’

David Moyes believes Arsene Wenger’s recent comments over the effort of teams towards the end of the season are an “insult”.

Wenger courted controversy earlier this week with quotes seemingly directed towards West Ham, who lost 4-0 to Liverpool last weekend.

The Gunners need either the Reds or Manchester City to drop points as they pursue a top-four finish, but the Frenchman was seemingly frustrated that other sides who were safe from relegation were “holidaying” towards the end of the season.

Wenger reiterated his point on Tuesday evening after beating Sunderland, saying: “You want all the teams to fight like Sunderland did tonight and, after, you have to accept the result.”

Black Cats boss Moyes was unhappy with his rival’s comments.

“I think that’s an insult to football as I’ve been a player myself,” he said.

“I would hate it if anyone would question me if I was going to chuck a game away. We didn’t play well on Saturday, we know that but I think you can see Sunderland had a go, tried to score at times but we were outclassed by a better football team.”
