No Europa, no contract extension for Mourinho – reports

Jose Mourinho will not given a contract extension or pay rise if Manchester United fail to win the Europa League, according to reports.

United were preparing to give Mourinho both an extension on his four-year deal, and also increase his salary above Pep Guardiola’s at Manchester City, but an exclusive in the Sunday Mirror claims that the decision could be shelved.

Mourinho’s Manchester United have struggled in the Premier League this season, finishing sixth despite being second favourites for the title at the start of the campaign. They have won the EFL Cup, and reached the Europa League final by beating Celta Vigo 2-1 on aggregate.

With United set to lose £50m in revenue if they fail to qualify for the Champions League, Mourinho knows the importance of Wednesday’s final. It now also appears that so does his bank manager.

There is no suggestion that United are losing faith in Mourinho, they will not offer an extension or rise based on this season’s performance.
