Mark Noble believes that Joe Hart “probably deserves a little more respect”, with the goalkeeper set to join West Ham this week.
Hart was pictured travelling to London at the weekend ahead of an expected loan move to the Olympic Stadium.
The goalkeeper spent last season at Torino, but City’s demands are too high for a permanent suitor to meet.
Hart was also keen to remain in England after his brief spell in Italy, and West Ham will provide that opportunity.
His reputation has been harmed in recent years after a number of disappointing performances for England, while one of Pep Guardiola’s first actions as City boss was to drop him.
“I’ve known Joe for a long time, we played for England U21s together years ago,” West Ham captain Noble told Sky Sports ahead of the move.
“He is obviously a fantastic goalie but at the minute he is not our player. We have got two really good goalies here so it would be more competition for them.
“In my opinion, he has been a little bit hard done by in recent years. He has been fantastic for England and for his club for the last 10 years, and he probably deserves a little bit more respect.”
