Oh Davey: Moyes hit with touchline ban

Sunderland manager David Moyes will serve a one-match touchline ban at Bournemouth on Saturday after admitting a misconduct charge from the Football Association.

Moyes was sent off towards the end of Sunderland’s EFL Cup tie at Southampton after remonstrating at the decision by referee Chris Kavanagh not to award a penalty.

The Black Cats boss, whose side are bottom of the Premier League and without a win in 10 games after the 4-1 home defeat by Arsenal, chose not to appeal against the charge, the standard penalty for which also includes an £8,000 fine.

The sanctions will be imposed immediately by the governing body.

A statement on thefa.com read: “David Moyes will serve an immediate one-match touchline ban after he admitted using abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official and accepted the standard penalty.

“The incident happened in or around the 90th minute of Sunderland’s EFL Cup fixture at Southampton on 26 October 2016.

“As well as the suspension, the standard penalty for this breach of FA Rule E3 also includes an £8,000 fine.”

Following the cup tie on October 26, Moyes admitted he deserved to be sent to the stands.

The Black Cats boss was furious after believing Maya Yoshida had brought down Sunderland forward Victor Anichebe in the area, when a late penalty would have given his beleaguered side hope of booking a quarter-final place.

”I was sent off for leaving my box and swearing at the fourth official,” Moyes said.

”The problem was he chased me down the touchline. I swore at him and I shouldn’t have done so I deserved to be sent off.”

Moyes was in no doubt about the late penalty claim which angered him so much, but was waved away by referee Kavanagh.

”When you see it again it’s a stonewaller, no question,” he added. ”Inside the box Yoshida fouls Victor, he comes across him, and it should have been a definite penalty awarded.”

Sunderland have lost their last four games in all competitions, picking up only two league points so far this season as they prepare to head to Bournemouth on Saturday.
