Michael Owen has named Tom Cleverley, Shinji Kagawa and Nani amongst 11 players who would beat the Manchester United side who lost to Wolfsburg.
The former United striker and erstwhile BT pundit reeled off the names of 11 outfield players who he claims are better than the current line-up.
“I feel with all the money that has been invested – it’s a worse squad than it was,” he said.
“We were looking at the players Van Gaal has let go in his reign during the 18 months and I’m sure they would beat tonight’s team.
“We had Rafael, [Nemanja] Vidic, [Jonny] Evans and [Patrice] Evra as a back four. Nani, [Shinji] Kagawa, [Tom] Cleverley, [Robin] van Persie and Chicharito [Javier Hernandez]. [Adnan] Januzaj is another one. [Danny] Welbeck is another one.
“We thought only two outfield players from tonight’s team – Chris Smalling and Michael Carrick – would get into the 11 that he’s actually let go.
“Apart from that the players he has let go are probably better than what we’ve seen tonight – and that’s after all that investment.”
To be fair, Owen is right that all those players are better than Nick Powell.
