Pogba needs to stop trying to show off – Scholes

Paul Scholes thinks Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba can become one of the best box-to-box midfielders in the world if he stops trying to “show off” his talent.

Pogba became the most expensive player in world football when he moved from Juventus to Old Trafford for £89million in 2016 but he has failed to hit the heights some fans expected with the huge price tag.

The 24-year-old has impressed in periods, especially when he has been fit this season – but some critics feel there is a lot more to come from Pogba.

And Scholes reckons the Frenchman can sometimes be guilty of trying things on the pitch that don’t suit his abilities.

“Paul Pogba can be this box-to-box midfielder, although he can do a lot better, especially score more goals,” said Scholes.

“He has a big range of attributes. He is fast, his passing game is exceptional. I am sure he will cross these levels.

“Mentally, he still has a lot of room to improve to become more consistent. He should especially try not to do so many complicated things.

“He has a high price-tag [£89m] and maybe that gives him the feeling that he has to show off his talent.

“But he doesn’t have the ability to dribble past three or four players before hitting it in the top corner. He will never be this type of player and sometimes he tries too much to do things that do not match his qualities.

“If he starts to try to dribble by players, he is no longer himself.”
