Juan Mata has been ditched by Spain for Euro 2016 despite playing in their last six matches in the run-up to the announcement.

Mata joins Morgan Schneiderlin and Michael Carrick as Manchester United midfielders missing out on this summer’s major tournament.

The 28-year-old midfielder has previously won the World Cup and European Championship with Spain but has been left out of their provisional 25-man squad.

Also missing out are Diego Costa and Fernando Torres, denied a recall after helping Atletico Madrid to the Champions League final.

The biggest surprise in Spain is the omission of Valencia striker Paco Alcacer, ditched despite scoring six goals in 13 games for Spain.

Premier League-based players who are included are David De Gea, David Silva, Cesar Azpilicueta, Pedro and Cesc Fabregas.
