PSG coach Unai Emery has name-checked Neymar, Alexis Sanchez and Kylian Mbappe as he underlines the need for the French club to buy one of the world’s best players.
They have been linked with a £196m world-record move for Brazilian Neymar, who is said to be tempted by the prospect of being the main man in Paris.
Spanish reports say that Neymar feels frustrated at being behind Lionel Messi at Barcelona in terms of both pay and status, believing he will never win the Balon d’Or if he continues to play in the same team as the Argentine.
The Parisian club already have a glut of Brazilians, with Thiago Silva, Dani Alves, Lucas Moura and Marquinhos at the club, who would make Neymar their highest-paid player on almost £600,000 a week after tax.
Emery has confirmed his club’s interest but has also hinted that Mbappe would be his preferred option.
“If PSG want to rival Bayern, Real and Barcelona, we need a player in the top five in the world,” Emery told L’Equipe.
“Since he joined Barcelona, Neymar has progressed a lot. I witnessed this while with Sevilla. Now, he is among the world’s top five. The president and the club have been working for the past few years on bringing in the best players.
“The team, but also the fans, would be happy to boast a player in the top five, six or seven in the world on top of the strong players we already have here.
“After that, this quest is not over. Perhaps he will arrive, perhaps not.
“Sanchez and Mbappe are fantastic players. Moreover, Mbappe is French. I want French players at a French club.”
