Memphis Depay could end up costing Manchester United up to £34million, according to reports.

Football Leaks, who on Monday revealed the true cost of Luis Suarez’s move from Liverpool to Barcelona, have revealed the finer details of United’s deal for the 22-year-old, who was initially believed to be a £20million to £25million recruit.

United paid PSV €34million (£26.7million) for the player before bonuses, with €17million (£13.35million) of the money being paid immediately.

There were then two payments of €8.5million (£6.6million) to be made. One was paid at the end of January this year, with the next due on July 1.

There are also Champions League clauses in Memphis’ deal for the next three seasons. If United reach the semi-final stage of the competition up to and including the 2019/20 season, they would have to pay PSV a further €325,000 (£255,000). If United then make the final, that figure would be €650,000 (£510,000) and then €1.35million (£1million) if they were to win it.

Success in Premier League in the same time frame would cost United a €1.35m payment, but all the additional payment bonuses have been capped at €4million (£3.1million).

The document also states that United have agreed to pay PSV up to €5m, or 10% of the difference of profit from any prospective sale of the Dutch winger, who actually signed a pre-contract agreement a month before he completed his move to Manchester United in June, 2015.

Memphis has been a major disappointment at Old Trafford after making an encouraging start to life at Old Trafford and he has scored just seven goals, two in the Premier League in 39 appearances.
