Jamie Redknapp was left baffled – like the rest of us – by England’s deep midfield of Eric Dier, Jordan Henderson and Wayne Rooney against Slovakia.
‘Seeing England’s midfielders playing so deep against Slovakia was hard to watch. Why on earth did Dele Alli not start?’ said Redknapp in the Daily Mail.
‘We have been so bad at the last three tournaments that I did not expect Sam Allardyce to wave the magic wand. But we could have helped ourselves by playing the right players.
‘Jordan Henderson and Eric Dier are good, solid players but we need more guile in midfield.
‘Alli has real imagination, skill and the ability to unlock doors. He is one of the best players we have produced in a long time.
‘I hope Ross Barkley was watching this game at home and thinking: ‘How can I not get into this side?’
‘Barkley offers what no-one else does – the ability to run at pace and go past people in those central areas.’
